December 2011: Brief van een ouder en leerling

Letter from a parent:

My name is Wasie Asmare. I am 38 years old. I live in Dera district Huletu Wogedamie kebele avillage called Wogedamie Gebrael. altI am a farmer and CMC member of Wogedamie Gebrael Elemantary School which was established at 2007 by the support of Wabe Children¬s Aid and Training and EDUKANS in active participation of the community.

I have 2 children, 1 male and 1female, who are engaged in learning in W/Gebrael school. Hereby, I would like to remind the challenges that had been suffering our children and the community at large before the establishment of school of W/gebrael by WCAT as follows.

  • Most of our children were out of school following the tail of cows in the fact that access of schools were not reached by small age children. Schools such as, Ambesamie, Cheba, Seniemariam…were too far .
  • The presence of a big river in between our village and the available schools was also another obstacle that aggravated the challenges to reach to schools.
  • Children with disabilities were not even identified where they live and it was absolutely impossible to let them learn in these far distant schools.
  • Early marriage and harmful traditional practices were highly day to day actions of the community.
  • Child trafficking and labour exploitation were greatly harming children.
  • While after the establishment of school of W/Gebrael all the above challenges have been resolved and dissolved through time in our children and the community.
  • Therefore;
  • All school age children have got the opportunity to learn properly WCAT constructed a school having 6 rooms and toilet and provided ample school, instructional and educational materials for students per head every year, recruited enough number of facilitators etc.
  • Quality education has been provided for school children and most of the first and second entrants transferred to the next level of schools and they have been learning even by achieving high ranks in their schools.
  • Early marriage has been much more minimized significantly Sense of school owner ship has been realized among the community.
  • Children with disabilities have been paid a fundamental attention so that most of them with semi-disabilities enabled to learn.
  • Even adults that were illiterate have been engaged in learning in functional adult literacy program flexibly.

Harmful Traditional Practices have been also minimized even though, further effort is needed. More over I want to acknowledge WCAT and its partners for all these successes which have been supported by WCAT and being continuously supervised and monitored by its staffs and hence our ABEC has been upgraded to regular primary levelby the decision of worda administration and education office which made great pleasure to every members of our community and finally, we need additional supports of WCat and EDUKANS to expand additional classrooms sustainably and to construct additional female and male separated toilets for our school improvement and attractiveness in the future that the participation of the community can exceed the previous one.

Thank you very much!

GOD bless you

Wasie Asmare from W/Gebrael (parent)

Letter from a student:

My name is Asrat Wondie Yitay. I am 12 years old and I am grade 2 student in Abalibanos ABEC. I live in Dera woreda Wonchet kebele at Abalibanos village.I have a movement problem on my two legs that made me paralysed at a time which i don`t remember. I came to school by the enforcement of teachers and centre management committees in which i was kept at home not to be exposed even for my age mates in my surrounding. I have got a good chance to learn in spite that this organization constructed school of Abalibanos.

Now I am following my education in this school equally with my friends and I have been provided with ample number of exercise books, pens and pencils so that I am confidential to come early in the morning to come to school with the help of my stick and my classmates in the fact that the school is constructed very near for my village.

All the staffs of the school are comfortable for me, they encourage me as if i am not disabled and hence i can continue my school without any inferiority. Now I don`t have any feeling in relation with my leg movement problem due to the support from the teachers and the organization as well as the school is established at a very near distant for my home. I think the school is constructed only for my purpose that if this School were not installed here I wouldn`t have been enter to school to learn throughout my life due to my moment obstacle and my families in volunteer to send.

I need this ABEC to have upgraded and expanded classrooms especially for those children with disabilities and small age children that we cannot travel to Schools of Hamusit and Mutansa which are very far from our village.

I like you and WCAT for all your supports in the past and in the future.

Asrat Wondie from Abalibanos
